Boil eggs in an electric kettle – soft, hard or in between?
Short answer: yes you can. However soft or hard you like your boiled eggs, an electric kettle can definitely help.
How to boil an egg. Or two.
Here are a few tips to make sure your egg comes out of the kettle in one piece:
Don’t use an electric kettle with an exposed heating coil. Eggs crack if they touch hot coils
Always use cold water to stop the eggs cracking
For a softer egg, boil the water once and leave the egg in until the bubbles stop.
For a harder egg boil the water once, then wait 2 minutes and repeat 2-3 times (ideally in a kettle that switches off automatically when it boils)
Alternative method with less supervision: boil around 1 litre of water in the kettle. After it switches off automatically, put the eggs in. How soft or hard they end up is up to you:
10 minutes are enough for a soft egg.
15 minutes are ideal for a hard boiled egg.
An electric kettle uses slightly less electricity than the saucepan method. The water heats up simply and quickly in the sealed container. Especially when heating small amounts of water, using a separate pan wastes effort and energy.
