selfmade ice cream

DIY ice cream with a hand blender – it couldn’t be easier.

However old we get, those childhood images of sunshine and ice cream never seem to fade. But one thing has definitely changed. Instead of standing in line for ages, coins in your hot little hand, you can now make your own ice cream at home instead. With a CARRERA electric whisk, it’s really easy.

My ice cream tastes of natural ingredients

Now it’s so easy to make your own ice cream with a hand whisk, everyone can make their own favorite flavors. With natural ingredients becoming more important it’s hardly surprising ice cream makers are so popular. But do you really need an expensive machine just to make ice cream? Here’s how to whip up a tasty treat in no time using a normal hand blender and the whisk attachments.

DIY ice cream with only a hand whisk?

Making your own ice cream isn’t rocket science. The basic recipe is simple and uses the ingredients you find in vanilla ice cream. After that, you can tweak it any way you want.

Here’s the basic recipe:

  • Put milk and cream in a saucepan.
  • Halve a vanilla pod, scrape out the mark and add it to the saucepan.
  • Heat the cream and milk to just below boiling point, then allow to stand.
  • Meanwhile, beat the egg yolk and sugar with the whisk attachment of your hand blender (highest setting!) until light yellow.
  • Pour the cream/milk in a thin stream onto the egg/sugar mixture, stirring all the time. Place the bowl and mixture in a double boiler (bain-marie). Heat to 75-85 °C, then remove from the heat.
  • Place the bowl in iced water. Stir occasionally.
  • 7. Put the cold mixture in the freezer compartment. Stir every 30 minutes until everything is frozen.

A matter of taste

It’s really easy to vary the taste of the basic mixture. All you do is fold in the ingredients you want – for example spices, mate tea or chai, syrup, liquid chocolate, cocoa or pureed fruit.

Want more? Try adding chopped nuts or pieces of chocolate or dates to your DIY ice cream 2.0 too. Just make sure you only fold them in at the end. If you do it too soon, the ice cream might not freeze consistently. You can also add semi-liquid ingredients like pureed fruit or syrup just before you serve your ice cream. Drizzles and patterns always make a good impression.

Tip: When using pureed fruit, always add a little sugar to prevent ice crystals from forming.

Time for a new hand blender? Choose one with lifestyle flair – plus a spiral cord that won’t drag through your ingredients.
